How do services & infrastructure keep up?
More people and more density are already straining city services and infrastructure that help make Kitchissippi the best place to live, work and play. However, with major developments underway in Westboro and coming soon to Tunney’s Pasture and LeBreton flats, tens of thousands of more people will soon be relying on our existing roads, transit, recreation and green spaces. This is not sustainable.
Our voice about what is needed in Kitchissippi is essential at City Hall when big decisions are made by the next city council on Tunney’s Pasture and LeBreton Flats. Our voice is also essential to deliver solutions on the services and infrastructure that we use everyday in our growing community.
This is why we need a councillor to be the voice for the services and infrastructure we need from City Hall.
As councillor, I will be your voice and focus efforts on:
- A plan for our major roads and practical traffic solutions. We’re fortunate to have the LRT and many bus options available in our community, but we also know that there will be more cars in our community as we grow. As your councillor, I’ll advocate for a transparent study on how our major roads will handle projected growth and seek community engagement on potential options. I’ll also listen to resident concerns and seek practical traffic solutions that keep traffic flowing safely.
- Reliable transit. A city the size of Ottawa must have reliable transit. For our ward, this means that buses must show up on schedule so that riders can get to work, pick up their kids or get to an appointment on time. I’ll track performance of key local bus routes and work alongside other councillors and the mayor to restore reliability to our transit system.
- Recreation for our population. We’re fortunate to have fantastic recreation centres like Dovercourt, Plant Rec and Tom Brown Arena in or near Kitchissippi. Our challenge is that these facilities are bursting at the seams and Tom Brown Arena is facing an uncertain future. With one third of Ottawa’s population growth happening within the Greenbelt, aging facilities and no plan for expansion to serve growth, we need a councillor to champion a new recreation facility and prevent us from losing more urban arenas like Tom Brown.
- Maintain and grow greenspace. Parks are gathering places for people of all ages and our tree canopy improves our quality of life. This is especially important as density increases and people living in highrises look for greenspace to enjoy. With available space shrinking, it’s more important than ever to maintain and grow greenspace where we can. As councillor I’ll work to ensure that our parks are maintained and tree canopy grows.
- Support and security. Social services, such as affordable housing and support for those on our streets with mental health and addiction challenges are part of what’s needed for our city. So too is law enforcement, such as the community policing model that allows officers to know our neighbourhoods. As councillor, I’ll support those who need our support, and community policing to keep our community safe.
We need a voice for Kitchissippi at City Hall for complex challenges like reliable transit and keeping our arena to specific needs like parking enforcement and park maintenance in our neighbourhoods.
